States of Fear: Science or Politics? with Michael Crichton

States of Fear: Science or Politics? SAMPLE Featuring: Michael Crichton and a Panel of Distinguished Scientists At one time, both the pseudoscientific geocentric notion of the universe (that the Earth lies at the center of the solar system) and eugenics (the racial theory to “purify” the human race) were widely accepted by leaders in science, politics, journalism, and business. Such theories were pushed by powerful interest groups that possessed highly politicized agendas driving government policies and public opinion, until ultimately both theories were disproved. Is environmental debate today, including global warming, bio-technology, and other issues, based on science or politics? Are popular accounts of such issues rooted in science or phantom risks? Are government policies focusing on the trivial while ignoring the real, and in the process wasting limited resources, crippling human innovation to address true dangers, and inviting tyranny? In discussing not just environmental issues but the increasing politicization of science itself, best-selling author Michael Crichton examines the intersection of media, politics, and science, inspiring viewers to challenge old assumptions and to search beneath the surface of issues as they seek to discover the truth. Scientists Bruce Ames (UC Berkeley), Sallie Baliunas (Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics), William Gray (Colorado State U.), and Oregon State Climatologist George Taylor show how scientific debates have been

Performed by Te Vaka during their first ever concert at Apia Park in Western Samoa. This song was written by Opetaia Foai in memory of David McTaggert, (founder of Greenpeace), for his invaluable contribution to the Pacific and his stand against nuclear testing and other environmental issues. When asked in an interview why he did what he did in spite of continual harrassment and beatings by police etc. He replied “I am doing it for our children’s children”

Maybe this is off-topic, but was anyone else severely disappointed with his new book, ‘Pirate Latitudes’?

  2. BadHabit202 says:

No man has done what Crichton has done. Doctor, writer, producer, director (decent attempt), philosopher…….but most importantly he stuck with what he believed in, science.

In response to the comment below, can you prove the theory of antropogenic global warming using empiricial evidence? (P.S. not Computer-models). Can you prove that UFOs do not exist somewhere in the universe or some possible time-line or alternate universe? Can you prove that Eyptians built the Pyramids? After all, you can’t take me back in time to see these things unravel in front of my very eyes! I would suggest to you – the first step to knowledge is the admission of ignorance!

2.5L deisel? sheeesh no wonder the brits think american cars suck…theyve never driven a proper one. do me a favor go to the SSC ULTIMATE ARROW site and say what you just said to me there.

  10. aiyic says:

The Veyron is a rare super-car for the mega-rich (costing about 1mEuro), so is not really one for making an arguement with as it’s such an exception to the rule – you’d be lucky to ever see one. I haven’t! Average American cars and pick-up exports are stifled by their engine size; only ones that can be sold with a smaller diesel engine (2.5 ish) make it through.

My main issue with you was that Germany doesn’t have leaded-only engines – that was incorrect – they have the same as the rest of us.

  11. markbotv3 says:

france makes a 16cylinder engine in the veyron. 9 liter i think but dont quote me on that.

  12. markbotv3 says:

ya someone else was mentioning that on another channel…carbon credits will become a commodoty traded on the free market like pork bellys and exxon stock…speculators will buy them up and sell them to companys that need them. for a big fat proffit…and as you can imagine the middle class will foot the bill with skyrocketing prices…gee thanks al gore.

  13. Gogowitsch says:

What about global climate change and the fate of your children and grandchildren? And you’re right: To my view, simply forbidding CO2-intense behavior is not as moral as including CO2 to your invoice, namely implementing a global system and trade of greenhouse gas pollution certificates.

  14. markbotv3 says:

7.2 gets 17mpg a 2.0 only gets 36mpg actually the 440 is more efficient per cubic inch than the four banger. pollution is caused by people density no city NEEDS more than 100.000 any more than that is fucking redundant…if you want to clean the air start by eliminating the excess population. and leave us country folks out of it cause we live in ballance with nature. the 7.2 uses 101 octane leaded supreme fuel

  15. aiyic says:

A 7.2 is massive. I can’t think of a single car beyond US, that has an engine that big, besides a truck. Zero emission ‘controls’, does not equal zero ‘emissions’.

Smog does not recognize borders my friend, regardless of engine size, or population density.

How can you *not* have a problem with emission control, but have a problem with being told to control emissions?

Pollution comes from engines, period. The more the consumption, the more the pollution of Earth’s atmosphere. 7.2 = guzzler

  16. markbotv3 says:

my car has a 7.2 liter engine. has zero emision controlls…and guess what…there has never been nor will there ever be smog in my county. pollution comes not from the size of the engine but how many over all engines there are. in citys i have no problem with emission controlls, but when they start telling us decent folks who dont have air pollution what to do thats where i draw the line

  17. aiyic says:

markbotv3, I know you wrote this 6mths ago, but you couldn’t be further wrong. Firstly, US cars (Oz too) needlessly have bigger engines, hence, more fuel consumed; 2.0 would be considered big in Europe and Japan – 1.6 is average. Germany uses unleaded like everyone else, as their cars are the same as the rest of us. Leaded doesn’t work in the engines. Most countries have bi-annual car tests which include emission-tests. VW, BMW, Opel & Merc have diesel options on all their cars, as do the rest.

I would have loved to meet him. I hate to think of all the other great books he hadn’t written yet. He died far to young. ;(

  19. librophile says:

I’ve watched the “Inconvenient Truth” DVD twice and assert that Al Gore took extreme care to well document & explain every bit of evidence provided in the film, to affirm a fact.

    CONCLUSION:

I absolutely agree with the documentary & the ongoing Global Warming & Climate Change.

    - It is not an American issue. It’s a world issue.
    - It’s not a political issue. It’s a moral. issue.

Right-Wing Conservatives—always siding with Big Oils—are hard at work smearing the irrefutable fact

  20. Guest3782 says:

Chrichton was a good guy and a great author. Too bad he’s gone.

By the way, State of Fear is an excellent book, and incredibly informative.

  21. markbotv3 says:

european cars dont have emissions controlls. only american cars do. the emission devices are attatched at the dealership for sale in america. but in germany they still use leaded gasoline. sure it helps the performance but it is destroying the black forest with acid rain. do you remember acid rain? dont ever hear about it here in america anymore do you?

  22. Kitsune44X says:

Well kept, most cars don’t do much damage to the environment at all, particularly newer cars. However, I can’t see that American cars are particularly more advancedefficientetc than are European or Japanese models, so I think you may be overestimating the situation. It’s also worth noting that the designing of cars is in many respects an international effort, so arguing that a certain part of the world produces better cars (or electronics in general) is somewhat moot (still arguable though).

  23. enomarekim says:

Do some research, global warming is not gong to happen. the sun drives temperature, which in turn drives carbon level. The sun has been getting hotter, but will now begin to cool off, in the next 50 years, temperatures will go back down.

  24. enomarekim says:

You need to start thinking more about causes and effects. because the world will soon start to get colder, many species may die out. This has always happened on earth, and always continues to happen. extinction is not caused by humans. Animals either survive or adapt, and helping them out by “rescuing them” is mush like welfare, it allows the weak to survive. The free market can do no wrong, because it allows people to make their own decisions. People can only wrong themselves.

With all the nuclear problems in the past, we are still trying to stop the spread of Nuclear Isotopes throughout the Pacific. It is sad that the US will be spreading U 235 and U238 throughout the Waianae Coast waterways. We will be eating these nuclear isotopes soon. The military will be starting to clear their Nuclear Isotopes off Maili Shores April 2011, and shredding arsenal and washing the dust contents into the ocean. How disgustingly sick this is, birth defects, sick sick people. Hewa!
