Tommy is the only living original member.
Tommy wins XD
Not just that, but getting a band together was Tommy’s idea. It was his initial vision, including making Joey the singer, John the sole guitar player and Dee Dee the bass player. I don’t know how Johnny can say “Tommy’s great” and say that Tommy was the only producer who got what they were trying to do — and then turn around and say that Tommy wasn’t important to the sound of the band.
I agree 100% with Flipper. Johnny is my favorite Ramone for his discipline & as a guitarist. I don’t know why DeeDee & Johnny would not rave about Tommy. But he really brought the guys together because he had a studio for other bands. I underestimate the other guys songwriting abilities and I admit that. If you don’t have good songs (music and lyrics), you aren’t going to put asses in the seats or sell records. The great thing about this documentary is it is mostly about their early years.
Tommy played with a light, fast touch…it really complemented Joey’s deadpan vocals.
That would be a great short film as well
“When Phil Spector kidnapped The Ramones”.. Now that would be a bestseller.
@blah24j lol! I told my cousin that and he said “duh that’s marky retard” and I said I knew that
Dee Dee and Thommy seem like the real soul of the band where Joey is just from another planet and Johnny seems like a real cunt
I love Johnny’s guitar playing, but he seems like a jerk.
He meant the bass playing. Not the song writing. His guitar playing is hard to do, and I have no idea what he was talking about with the singer. He does have a unique voice.
Agreed. 100%. I am a huge Johnny fan. This doesn’t make sense to me, as well as the comment of “Different singers and it still sounds like the Ramones”. What different singers? I can only think of Dee Dee in the early early days. The guitar is the main aspect of the Ramones sound, I love Johnny, but I still can’t figure that one out.
06:44 – spotted a KISS lunchbox in the background! m/
Johnny may have seemed like a dick, but it didnt bother me. We love these guys because their imperfect, like all of us. There is nothing phony about any of these guys. Ill take a jerk who lets others know what he thinks, over a 2 faced phony who acts nice to your face, but bad mouths you behind your back. I like the “what you see is what you get”, types. Besides, these guys are blue collar and street tough, who never claimed to be angels. I love the mix of personalities, all of thm had.
Tommy looks a bit like Bono.
i mean i really love end of the century and im kind of in love with it right now, and im a phil spector fan, but geez…they’re a coupla suits
the assistants are STOOGES, fucking STOOGES…
regardless of bad blood.. just love the ramones, life happens.. god bless
thats pretty funny at the end when johnny is complaining that phil treats everyone like an asshole
They were all important, but who’s to say if they had different members at the start, things would change? If the Ramones didn’t have Tommy or Dee Dee, or anyone, if they were all different people, nobody would know any better because nobody could have realized how huge the band would have gotten. It’s only AFTER the fact they’ve become a household name that people say “oh that’s bullshit they needed all those guys”.
Joey Ramone and Phil Spector.
Tommy only wrote Blitzkrieg Bop, the most famous tune
Yeah. Not important at all :/
Johnny is full of shit. Maybe a different drummer and bass player but without Joey’s vocals? No way that would sound like the Ramones. They would sound like a cover band at best. It took all of them (Tommy included ) to come up with the sound in the first place.
”its a better thing to do then eat some………..Dope and… potatoe chips ”
in my humble opinion, Tommy WAS important. he was the BELIEVER in the band. the other guys were misfits, they had to come to Tommy with a concept for him to take them at all seriously. that’s why I think the first record comes across as being so conceptual. Dee Dee puts Tommy down in his account, but this is Dee Dee the “bad boy”. but if he had a believer he would have more faith on his rap project, which was perhaps so off the wall like early Ramones stuff. just an opinion…
wow, they pissed on tommy pretty hard
i feel sorry for them for pissing on them for pissing on tommy so hard
